Welcome Back to the blog! Today we will be discussing Wicked! I just saw it this past weekend, and went into it with no prior knowledge of the play, other than it’s well beloved! And even though I saw a few spoilers online, it was still incredibly magical! Let’s get into it…
First things first

I completely understand why Cynthia & Ariana were crying during every interview! This musical was everything and more! And it makes me now want to go back and watch the original play. I love when musicals are adapted into big budget films, because we get to see the story play out as big and glorious as it should be , and on the big screen. That’s something you can quite capture on a stage. Their dynamic and comedic timing with each other was incredible, and you can see they spent a long time bonding with each other and their characters!

Cynthia Erivo was literally so magnificent! I knew about her musical talent and acting skills from her being in the Harriet Tubman film. So I knew she would secretly smash this film! And she did just that and then some, i understand the hype around her performance now! And if she doesn’t get that Oscar nomination and award, she was ROBBED. As soon she sung, I cried. She sings with so much power and emotion, she’s such a performer. I feel like with a black woman playing Elphaba for the first time in history, it truly shows the point of the character and story! Elphaba is treated horrible because of the color of her skin, even with her being reduced to evil and calling her viallin at the end. And no one knows how that feels more than a black woman in real life. Jon Chu did the absolute right thing by casting her, he made several points! But also with the plot of the entire film, I can’t believe it’s taken this long to cast a black woman in the role, or why the role wasn’t originally intended for a black woman.
It’s a pretty long film, almost measured in 3 hours. But it’s worth every shot, and made me remember why I love musicals so much! I always feel alive coming out of a theater from seeing a musical!

Of course Ariana did a great job of completely transforming into Glinda. I was not surprised as many others , that she pulled this part off! I grew up with Ariana on nick and knowing she was a broadway baby and a classically trained star. So I knew deep down and if pushed, we could get this type of performance! Now I will admit, I wanted Dove Cameron in this role badly, my girl juts has that Glinda aura naturally. And as well has the broadway and classically trained vocals for the part . But I do think in the end the part went to the right person, as Ariana practically melted with chemistry with every actor in the film. I think this film healed Ariana and I feel like I even read somewhere that she feels she gone back to her musical roots and will now be putting music second. And with her talent , I can’t wait to see it!
Overall LOVE this film and give it 10/10, incredible story, incredible cast, and incredible acting! And the fact we get part two next year has me absolutely buzzing, because according to the fan blogs, it’s about to get dark! And I can’t wait!
