Queer Poc Artists 🌈
By : Shanise Lachelle
Pride month is approaching very fast, but as a gay woman 365 days out the year, we don’t wait for pride month! The gay music community is full of talented gays, she’s, and theys of every color and background! But today I will be naming some of my favorite POC queer artists I listen to! We absolutely need more POC queer artists on the scene, and these few are really doing the work to bring more diversity to such a beautiful community. Let’s get into it…
Kehlani started off as bi , later on in her life came to realize she was a lesbian! And I’ve never related more to someone’s coming out story. Fun fact, her therapist helped her realize her true sexuality. Her music is soulful queer R&B. And has done such a good job becoming mainstream. Hayley Kiyoko started off on Disney Channel, then branched out. She’s known to the community as lesbian Jesus. Her most viral hit Girls like Girls, made her an instant queer sensation! She even has a novel of the same title out!Janelle Monae– Hines no introduction needed ! This pansexual queen has been making waves in films and music for over a decade! And I don’t see her stopping anytime soon.Raveena Aurora- stumbled upon her on a tumblr list of queer music recommendations, and my ears and heart have been blessed ever since!Rina Sawayama- I also found rina on that same tumblr recommended post I found raveena. In search for more poc queer music! I’ve only touched the surface of her music and I absolutely loved it! I just think she’s the absolute coolest.Lauren Jauregui- ex fifth harmony member, who was outed by crazed fans during her time in the group. Even though she had an awful coming out, it turned into something beautiful with her becoming a quiet staple within the queer community! She’s very vocal about human rights and what’s going on in the world, all while making amazing music true to her heart!
I hope to continue my journey on finding even more and less mainstream queer music to listen to. I love being a black gay woman and love having poc experiences to listen and relate to through music!
