As a now half fully blossomed Gay Women/no longer a baby gay/( in terms of I’ve been coming out consistently since 2019.) there hasn’t been much queer media for me to love and relate to. But every 5 years there’s always one or two that’s released and I dig my teeth into it and hold it so dear to my heart. Here are some of my new favorite GAY movies. And some queer films I have no intentions of seeing or don’t really love all that much. Let’s get into it…

Literally one of the first few gay movies I saw and made me question everything. it’s so early 2000s and so ridiculous, But so much fun!!

Blue is the Warmest Color
Was seriously so obsessed with this movie, I did a paper on it for my class in college.( I got a C btw, professor was a hater.) I know it gets a lot of backlash from my community but it was one of the first gay movies I saw that almost somewhat accurately displayed a queer couple and a young women’s coming of age into being queer. And I totally related to her in some aspects. (Definitely not the cheating aspect.) definitely would have been better directed by a woman for sure!

Queer lead couple and horror, what more could my gay horror loving heart want?! This movie was pleasantly surprising and I went in with low expectations to be honest and left loving everything about this film! It’s a frequent rewatch for me!!

Even with the behind the scenes drama with Auli’i and Rowan, I still absolutely adored this movie! It was refreshing to see just a fun gay romcon, where a few of the characters are gay and already out living their happy best lives! Super cute movie, carried me through 2022!!

Bottoms was released last year and I had no clue about it , until my cousin sent it to me in a DM saying she wanted to see it. I of course was against it at first for some internalized homophobic reason. but got over myself and secretly watched it and LOVED IT. It’s so funny and witty. Would have loved it even more if BOTH leading ladies were queer. But I guess one gay is better than no gay.
Now on to the movies I’ve either never seen or seen and don’t care too much for it. * not saying these are bad movies by the way, just not for me

I know the community LOVES this movie and it’s a national treasure for some reason . But I’d literally rather stick needles in my eye than watch two heterosexual WHITE actors pretend to be gay in a period piece. I just don’t understand why there aren’t more POC gay films and why they keep casting straight actors when there’s tons of QUEER actors who will happily be in their movies.

Saw it and thought it was cute. Especially loved the beginning where all the straight teenagers came out to their parents instead of the queer teens! But I’m over movies about a gay kid being outed or the whole movie centered on them coming out. That seems to be the only thing heterosexual Hollywood writers want to write about. ( just shows how there needs to be more queer writers making queer films.) update: the writer of this film and book is BI. But my statement still stands.
I still struggle a lot with internalized homophobia and comphet, but I love and feel so seen when I can watch genuine queer media! Maybe one day, I’ll have many more mainstream queer films to add to this list! And I hope that day is soon. Hollywood we wanna see the GAY STUFF. We want accurate representation!!!! Give the gays what they WANT!
