Am I Okay Review

By : Shanise Lachelle

Welcome Back to the Blog! Today we will be reviewing , AM I OKAY?. A film about a late In life lesbian trying to figure it all out !

Let’s get into it….

The movie follows Dakota Johnson as Lucy, an awkward 32 year old who’s trying to figure out her love life.

Accompanying her on this journey is her best friend Jane played by actress Sonoya Mizuno. I really enjoyed their dynamic and it felt super realistic to two 30 year old friends at different parts of their life! Their fight scene was very realistic but also awkward and cringe! Which made it all the more real.

I know this movie WONT be for everyone, it’s very dry humor and it’s kind of slow paced. I love Dakota Johnson and she gets a lot of flack for being a nepo baby and playing the same character over and over. It did feel as though she was playing herself in this film, just as a lesbian. we’ve seen her play this awkward dry humor character A LOT, so it would have been cool if Lucy was the complete opposite. I know she can act, but it does seem like she’s being typed casted at this point!

I think the film did a perfect job of portraying a late In life lesbian. It felt very personal as I too was a late in life lesbian . You feel lost for so long when you’re coming to terms with your sexuality. And you feel like you’ve waisted so much time .

Overall it was a pretty decent film, 4/5 for me. I feel the soundtrack wasn’t heavily impacted in this film and that’s one thing they could have stepped up to make this film so much better. Also like I mentioned earlier, making Lucy the opposite of Dakota Johnson, would have been refreshing as well.

I am happy to add another lesbian movie to my collection, as I don’t like many, but I’m happy we are getting more made . And more with different types of story lines!
