Wrong Turn vs Hills Have Eyes

By : Shanise Lachelle

Happy Tuesday and we’re of course back with another spooky post! Let’s get into it….

I don’t know what was in the water back in the day(mid 2000s), but the amount of inbred deformed killer horror movies we had was actually quite mad.

I recently watched both The Hills Have Eyes and Wrong Turn. And since they are actually very similar , I will be talking about which one I liked more.

Honestly LOVED how we got straight to it, as soon as the movie opens we get a pretty good kill . But with this movie there isn’t much of a story on the killers or how they came to be. They’re literally just running rampant in the woods killing people. I didn’t really vibe with the characters all that much, as soon as they were introduced they were killed. So there was zero emotional attachment for me. The setting for this one was a little bit more realistic, seeing how loads of people actually go camping or on roadtrips around wooded areas. So there actually could be a chance of you getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. it wasn’t anything special or even scary. But I do remember when it came out and the fear it put into some people. Like I said these type of movies were really popular for some reason.
In these movie’s there’s more at stake! Characters in both are completely stranded in the desert and have to fight their way out against cannibalistic inbred sadistic killers. There’s literally no hope , because even if they do win against the killers , where will they go after?! They’re literally in the middle of nowhere with no transportation or mobile devices. The killers in these films vary. The first ones were more of a family of killers and we got a little back story, It was more flushed out. There was “reason” for their killings. The second film it was almost just like the left overs from the family who completely lived in the mountains and became less human and more animalistic. The kills from the first one , especially since it was a relatable American family , was hard to watch. The kills in the second were a bit more on the shocking&silly side. But with them being a team of military aide , you just wanted them to win in the end.

So which mutated killer series is better ?

Definitely Hills Have Eyes. There’s just more story and character development. And not every movie needs to have that, but it makes it easier to feel something when the characters die or make it out. Versus just throwing a lot of attractive characters in then immediately killing them off.

I’m not particularly a fan of either and this is definitely NOT my favorite style of horror. But I know there’s a lane for it and if done correctly, it will be successful. However I haven’t really seen these type of films be popular in the last 5-6 years. So it just shows how popular different horror themes are in different times.

What’s your opinion on the mutated inbred killer trope? Has it died out? Was it ever really good? Let me know in the comments down below !
