HellRaiser Review

By: Shanise Lachelle

After nearly a decade of becoming a major horror fan, I’ve finally sat down and watched the cult classic HellRaiser. And it definitely wasn’t what I expected at first, let’s get into it!

I did say I wanted to watch more new horror this year, and not just in terms of new horror films that have come out lately. But overall horror films that I hadn’t given a chance . And HellRaiser was one of them. At first glance it just didn’t seem like something I would like and it seems very goofy. But after watching both 1&2, I’ve found a new horror franchise to add to my spooktober list!

We are introduced to pinhead in the first film that came out In 1987 and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I feel like 80s horror was very big on mixing horror with fantasy and this film was no exception. We first meet Frank who finds this “box” that is supposed to give you your every deepest dark fantasy and push you to your limits. But he soon finds out that after you solve the box you are immediately ripped apart by chains and sent to some version of a fantasy hell. the first 20 mins I was very bored, then it picked up and I couldn’t look away!

Frank’s regeneration from the floor boards of the attic was something I’d never seen before ! It was so gross but so cool! And definitely gave me that instant 80s vibe. I found the entire plot of the movie super interesting and couldn’t wait to see how it played out.

Kirtsy is now one of my new favorite final girls! She was pulled innocently into a world she didn’t deserve to be in and fought very hard to the end to live, In both HellRaiser 1&2.

The film definitely plays on the whole concept of people’s pleasure and how some dark fantasies will push you to do things you never thought you would. And shows how big of a topic sex was in the 80s. pinhead does say “to some I’m an angel and to others a demon”. Because while he does grant you anything you could want like an angel would, you definitely have to pay a gruesome price . And that price almost always consists of your life.

I never got the HellRaiser and Pinhead hype until watching these movies! And now I’m kind of obsessed.
