Off Campus Review

By : Shanise Lachelle

Welcome back to AsToldByShanise, today we will be reviewing new Amazon prime hit , OFF CAMPUS!

Let’s get into it…

First things first I’d never heard of this young adult series and didn’t know how popular they were. Second when social media started advertising this show, I literally rolled my eyes and couldn’t have been less interested. It just seemed super cringe and cheesy , and like another The Summer I turned Pretty. So I avoided it like the plague .

But then I started to see clips on TikTok and twitter and my interest was piped. And 3 weeks later I’ve rewatched the show atleast twice and I’m now on Tucker and Sabrina’s book,( I’m reading the books out of order ).

The show centers around a group of friends at a university located in Boston , that’s pride and joy is their hockey team. But our story starts with Hannah And Garret. Hannah is a shy but smart music nerd who needs help landing the hot musician of her dreams, and Garret is the captain of the hockey team who needs help passing a class. They strike a deal to help one another and end up falling in love along the way. After episode one, I was officially hooked. And as the episodes rolled out, i fell in love with this entire friend group.

They’re not perfect and they’re all flawed , and I think it’s somewhat relevant to what college kids may be going through nowadays. I will say the show was still cringe and cheesy at times , but what good romance novel isn’t ?! I did have to roll my eyes and politely fast forward through all the signing at times. It was giving Disney Channel,( and I LOVE MUSICALS/DISNEY). But it just wasn’t something I signed up for , but I let it play out for the story line .

The acting is genuinely good and the cast is full of fresh faces and newcomers, which I genuinely was impressed by and LOVED. I’m glad they didn’t cast a bunch of nepo babies or young stars we’d already seen 100 times over. I think that’s another reason the series has skyrocketed, because of the fresh face talent behind the story . it also helps sell the story even more that the cast has bonded and genuinely seem to like each other. It comes across naturally on the screen.

I’ve seen plenty of uproar about the boys looking “too old” to play college students. Which is hilarious to me because most of them are buff and tall, so at first I did think the same . But as the show went on they seemed more youthful. Also no one of the main cast has even hit their 30s yet, and the youngest male star is only 24. And the book series seems to be set near the end of college , so I feel they were casted perfectly.

Overall i give the series a 5/5, and its instantly became a rewatch and an immediate comfort show of mine. I still laugh each time at the humor and my heart still swells at the soft moments .

Off Campus is proof we want and NEED more fresh faces . And that we’re hungry for more smutty romance and rom-coms!!
