Welcome Back to AsToldByShanise! Today we will be reviewing the newest horror, Buddy.
Let’s get into it…
Buddy centers around a group of kids stuck in a children’s tv show, when they realize that something is quite not right with their pale Buddy. I did enjoy the premise of this movie . It was something different and you never really knew what was gonna happen or who if any would survive . Also liked how we spent maybe 10-15 minutes, before we jumped right into the horror aspect. There was literally no time waisted .

I’m usually not a fan of kid actors, as I don’t find them believable and it’s usually on the verge of cringey for me . But this young group of child actors were great actually and they did extremely well telling this story . I was a little shocked with how little gore there was but also by how much they showed the children not making it . I didn’t expect them to fully show it and thought they would water it down . And they definitely did not and went there .

Once we realize that Buddy is evil and maybe something else entirely, the movie shifts into uncomfortable territory. And I felt the underlying message of this film was about child molesters and maybe child actors in the industry. With what they’re exposed to and what they go through . On many occasions the children sought out adults to help and the adults either mislead them or acted like nothing was wrong . Which happens ALOT of times in real life abuse situations.
*Spoilers*
A few examples of this would be like , when they first noticed something was wrong and they told Betty bunny. She immediately showed hesitation and fear , but played it off and pretended like everything was fine. As long as the kids just went along with the party and apologized to buddy, everything was fine. Also when the kids manage to escape and meet stray “adults” who end up being weirdly inappropriate in front of the children . Then later on drugging them , once they gained their trust . which shows that even the adults you think you can trust, you can’t !!
I feel like the horror in this movie is not what I expected but it does highlight the actual horrors a lot of children go through on a daily basis . And it was extremely smart to market it as a typical slasher horror while also putting the kids in a children’s show. Where they should be protected and happy always . but as many industry child actors have come out to say, that’s not always the case !
I do still have a lot of unanswered questions! Like what exactly is buddy? Where did he come from? How did the kids end up in the show ? Did he personally pick each child? Are there others like Buddy in this universe? I feel like a franchise exploring these questions would be very interesting! And I would definitely tune in to a buddy back story !
I give Buddy 4/5, it was definitely something different that I liked ! And it scared me and made me uneasy in a way I wasn’t expecting!
