I saw Aladdin last night and wow. At first like everyone I was on the fence about this one. Not even the because of the casting but because I just wasn’t sure of this at all. At times Hollywood has a tendency to white wash middle eastern stories and films. And guy Richie is the director so I was a little like ehhh. This is could potentially be a disaster. But wow was I wrong . They actually casted culturally accurate actors. There were a few white actors but mostly actors or COLOR! Mena and Naomi were AMAZING!!!! Everyone’s praising Naomi and rightly so because she really made princess jasmine SHINE. But Mena was every bit of the 90s Aladdin and it made my heart full of childhood nostalgia. He was brilliant and I can’t wait to see what else he has lined up! The new musical scores for prince Ali and a whole new world were beautifully done and still kept the original essence. Will smith brought his own twang to the genie. And I actually liked what he did with the character! He didn’t try and outdo robins genie and he didn’t copy . He paid respect and did it his way. And it actually worked out pretty well. Over all I give it B+. Some parts to me were a bit over acted and some parts were a bit choppy. But the acting and musical numbers saved this movie. The musical numbers were so colorful and larger than life. Go see Aladdin and experience the childhood nostalgia we’ve all been dying for.
