Welcome Back To AsToldByShanise! Today we will be discussing a character from Evil Dead Burn, that I disliked the MOST. And the answer may surprise you…
Let’s get into it…

While we’re introduced to Joesph as the writer sweet little brother, who’s loyal to girlfriend Thya. he’s pretty much innocent and I liked him at first. He was the complete opposite of his douchbag brother : Will. We also see him in the beginning researching the book of the dead and the circle of the wise men. So at the top of this film, he has the “most” knowledge of what’s to come, even if he doesn’t completely understand it.

*spoiler alert*
With said knowledge, he does absolutely nothing with it. And this is where my frustration comes in. When things first start to get crazy in the car with his dad and Thya, it doesn’t completely register to him until after she is killed. He starts off helping Thya and fighting off his dad, just to fall back and run off. Leaving Thya alone to fight off the dad on her own.
Even so when Thya follows him to the family home, he is still pretty useless. and in my opinion one of the weaker characters of the entire series. He has the knowledge of what’s possibly going on and is still very little help to Alice .
I understand the theme of this evil dead centers around abuse . From your family and partners. You can see how the family views him as almost pointless and it’s clear they adored will and he was the “favorite” son. I understand he was afraid of his father and even so before he became possessed. And it was a hard thing for him to be able to kill his dad to protect his girlfriend. But he could have stayed and fought for her a little harder . her death was literally so brutal and so hard to watch her go through that.
Him being incompetent lead to Thya becoming a deadite. And one of my personal favorites. He’s unable to actually kill anyone until it becomes dire. Spends a lot of time hiding and running away. I wanted more for his character, as they set him up literally researching the very evil that was taking his family down. From a human level, I understand his fear and his reaction. But from a viewers perspective, I wanted him to fight harder and be tougher . But I guess that’s what makes his character so realistic. You never know how you will really act until put in such an odd and dangerous situation.
*spoiler*
I did enjoy Edgar throwing him around that house for about 15 minutes. It was both amusing and chaotic. As it was well deserved for him leaving Thya , but also I kept wondering how could he survive the brutal beating he was getting. It was a lot to watch . And I started to feel a little bad for him.
Overall I’ve noticed this character has cause a lot of online debate . With most being frustrated with his lack of fight and calling him useless, but others coming to his defense and saying he simply reacted in a human way.
