Welcome back to AsToldByShanise! Today we will be reviewing, Cabin Fever, by horror director Eli Roth.

Cabin Fever was released back in 2002, and I remember exactly when it came out and how much everyone loved it. It was something different and super gross, and it was one of the first times we were introduced to Roth and his directing style .

Cabin Fever is about a group of college age friends who go on a camping trip, when they come across a fresh eating disease. First things first , LOVED the premise . The ideal of a fresh eating disease killing everyone very fast and there NOT being a way to end it , is pretty sick and twisted. For 2002, this film was right on cue with the graphics and acting. For 2026 this is one of the most poorly executed horror films ever . Yes at this point it’s a cabin classic. But it’s just very overall stupid and gory. Which seems to be a Roth staple . When you get past all the gore, you realize his movies aren’t really much more than that. And they aren’t really scary .

The ending of this movie was very cheesy and dumb. No spoilers, but since it’s in the water, the whole town is basically going to die . I HATED how for some reason back in 2000s the use of the n word and black stereotypes were used heavily in films . Even when it majorly served zero purpose and almost as a gag. So image my surprise to watch this dumb movie to the end and see the store owner welcome a group of black young adults by saying “ what’s up my n****” and being racist but it being painted as a joke and “cool”. I seriously eye directors who put random racism tactics in their film like that, because what was the point ? And how was that even allowed ? And did the audience back in 2002 really enjoy that?! Maybe I’m too woke or sensitive as a black horror watcher, but I just felt it was super inappropriate and Made me hate the movie even more . I know the whole “point” was to show how instead of being wary of the young black adults he was cool with them, but it could have been done In a more tasteful way!

Cabin Fever (2002) 2/5 stars

It’s for sure an early 2000s classic but I’m not sure it will still have the same effect on audiences today. It will for sure gross you out and make your skin crawl, but that’s about it.
