Carrie Review

By : Shanise Lachelle

Welcome Back to AsToldByShanise! Today we will be reviewing the newest Carrie Reboot/remake!

Let’s get into it…

Summer H. Howell

Carrie is the classic cult horror hit by author , Stephen King! It’s been remade and rebooted I believe a total of 4 times. But this is the first time it’s being made into a complete series, rather than a movie . Carrie follows a telekinetic teenage who try’s to blend in with society and all while dealing with secrets from her overly cautious , religious and controlling mother, and puberty ! The story and plot is no surprise to Stephen King lovers or horror fans, as this book has been remade so many times .

So I wasn’t initially interested in this reboot and kind of thought it pointless. When the classic is still great and the remake with Chloe Grace Moretz was fantastic. It’s also just not my favorite Stephen king novel. But Mike Flanagan has managed to make me a major Carrie fan and actually love the story .

The acting in this series was phenomenal!! Like these actors were acting like their life depended on it, and I think that’s another reason it’s becoming so successful and audiences are praising this remake ! It’s without the best remake of Carrie! The performances in this show were so heavy and carried so well, I found myself tearing up multiple times each episode. a story I know like the back of my hand , became brand new to me. And I felt like I was really understanding and getting to know Carrie on a deeper level.

I love how all the main and side characters had enough of a back story to where you could kind of feel empathy for them. Even super evil Chris Hangensen. Who is by far the worst mean girl I’ve seen on tv in YEARS.

Overall the show is well done and I should have never doubted Mike Flanagan! He has proven time and time again he’s a great horror story teller, and he really shines with tv series! Haunting OF Hill House is still one of the most haunting yet beautiful remakes ever made to me! I’ve only been able to sit through it once , because it made me so emotional for that family .

Mike Flanagan has managed to tell horror in such a honest and realistic way. Yes there are still jump scares and some gore. But the reality is, sometimes real life is just as scary as the monsters under your bed . He does so well telling the stories of trauma and hurt . And he always has such a gifted and well rounded cast! He truly bought Carrie to life and made me an official fan of his !

Summer H. Howell is a phenomenal young actress! I see her future going very far , especially if she wanted to dabble in horror for a few more years! She would be an amazing final girl in a slasher ! The amount of emotion and story telling she was able to do with just her face. My heart broke for her so many times during this series.

The scene where Carrie and the guidance counselor are talking and they start going book quote for book quote , let me tell you , that scene was so beautiful. I sobbed, to be seen and encouraged to be yourself is so warm . And he made Carrie feel so safe and seen in that scene. It was so heartwarming, I wanted it to end because I couldn’t stop crying .

*Things I Didn’t Like *

The whole telekinesis/Emaline story line was a little extra and very stranger things season 2 . I understand he had to add something extra in there to maybe get further seasons . But I just felt a little annoyed with the side story line and it made it a little cheesy. But I was glad it wasn’t so overbearing and in each episode! But I’m sure if it gets a season 2, that’s exactly where we are heading .

Overall this show is a 10/10 and I can’t believe I almost didn’t watch it because of my hate for reboots!

In Mike Flanagan We Trust!!
